In the animated series Unicorn Academy, Sophia Mendoza’s father is named Miles Mendoza. He was a former student at the Unicorn Academy and became a unicorn rider, but he mysteriously disappeared (or is presumed dead). Sophia wears a pendant that he gave her, which motivates her to follow in his footsteps by enrolling at the Academy.

This is also why Sophia feels such a strong connection to the unicorns and the Academy — she wants to honor her family’s legacy.

Sophia and her father used to ride horses together on their ranch in California, before he disappeared when she was nine years old.

Miles Mendoza was also a unicorn rider; he sacrificed himself using star magic to defeat Ravenzella and protect Unicorn Island.
